Jacquard Knit

Create the pointpaper

To define the gauge, count the number of stitches per inch from the knitted sample.

No. pixels 7.87 stitches/cm x 42.33 cm = 333 8.66 stitches/cm x 26.25 cm = 227

Digitalization

The pointpaper size will be of 333 pixels in width and 227 pixels in height.

(1 pixel represents one stitch width and length)

Digitalize the scanned image by using the pattern menu.

Enter the new dimensions, the number of pixels per width and length of the future pointpaper 333 x 227.

Select the whole digitalization grid then click in " most frequent color " (for further information read the digitalization tutorial)

A pointpaper pattern is created with new dimensions of 333 x 227 pixels.

Activate the grid over your pattern to make the last corrections in the design before simulating.

Simulation

Resolution of the simulation

Verify the entered resolution under Preferences: Resolution.

For our example consider the resolution set in preferences is 180 dpi in width and length. This means that the program will automatically simulate at 180 dpi.

Knit pointpaper calculation in pixels

For a simulation of 180 dpi, 20 stitches/inch in length and 22 stitches/inch in width. Need to calculate the number of pixels available to design one knit stitch.

stitch size in pixels
width 180 dpi : 20 stitches/inch= 9
length 180 dpi : 22 stitches/inch= 8

Open the G20-o4 stitch from the Pointcarré stitch library. All stiches were created for simulations at 180 dpi.The size of the stitch design is of 9 x 12 pixels.

For the design to repeat perfectly, the repeat mode must be in overlap mode at the height direction.

In this example the stitch G20-o4 was drawn in a square of 9 x 12 pixels. This allows us to calculate its overlap.

Calculation

square size stitch size overlaping
height
12 pixels - 9 pixels = 4 pixels

Activate the repeat mode.

The repeat mode grid shows clearly the overlap.

Dotted square

Size of the design without overlap: 9 x 12 pixels.

Red square

Size of the design with overlap: 9 x 8 pixels.

Pointpaper simulation

The digitalized pointpaper (333 x 227 pixels) must be active.

Used stitch: G20–o4

Go under Knit: Specify jacquard. Click in Color n° and choose All.

Click in the white rectangle. Open, select the G20-o4 stitch from the stitch library (in silhouette format).

Enter the size of the overlapped repeat of width 9 and length 8.

Note :
If you do no enter the size of the overlapped repeat, the stitches will not repeat correctly in the simulation.

Click under the knit menu: simulate jacquard.

A new pattern (the simulation) is created. Each pixel in the pointpaper was replaced by the stitch pattern and each color was shaded with this stitch.

Note: This simulation has the exact dimensions in cm or inches of the fabric and a resolution of 180 dpi.

No. pixels 7.87 stitches/cm x 16.3 cm = 128 6.3 stitches/cm x 13.2 cm = 83

Calculation of the stitch size in pixels

For a simulation of 180 dpi, 20 stitches/inch in length and 16 stitches/inch in width. Calculate how many pixels are needed to draw this stitch.

stitch size in pixels
width 180 dpi : 20 stitches/inch= 9
length 180 dpi : 16 stitches/inch= 11

We’ll need a pattern of 9 x 11 pixels to design this stitch.

Create a new stitch

Open from the Pointcarré library a stitch that is as close as possible in size to the desired stitch. For example the G20-o4 stitch.

In the opening dialogue choose:

The silhouette opens automatically with the grayscale reserved for the sillhouettes (n°65 to n°79 of the color table).

This stitch repeat is of 9 x 12 pixels, with a repeat mode of 9 x 8 pixels.

We want a stitch of 9 x 11 pixels (the size of the stitch calculated for G20/C16).

What is the size of the stitch repeat ?

Calculation of the stitch size

Choose the same overlap for the new pattern.

G20/C22
G20/C16
pattern without overlap 9/12 pixels (9/11 pixels) + 4 pixels = 15 pixels
pattern with overlap
9/8 pixels
9/11 pixels
overlap
4 pixels
4 pixels

Resize your G20/C22 stitch. Go under Pattern : Modify : Resize. Enter the new size (height 15 pixels, width 9 pixels). Then click in "scale pattern".

Your stitch will look as following:

Width: 9 Length: 15

Finalisation of the new stitch

With the repeat mode tool, enter the overlap defined previously (which is 4) in the height direction.

The pattern for this stitch does not repeat perfectly. To correct do the following:
